Working it Off

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.  ~Plato

Thanks to my younger tom-boy years,  I was always very active, playing as many sports as my Mom was willing shuttle me to.  I continued to try and stay active through college and mid-20’s by sporadically visiting local gyms and getting outdoors for a walk or hike whenever possible.  I did not take up distance running until I started working at Ruby Tuesday and discovered the wonderful park system at our fingertips.  At first, I could barely jog a 1/2 mile without being out of breath, but with the help of my running partners, I worked my way up to a 5k in about 6 months.  At that point, running had become a passion.  The runner’s high, boost in self-confidence, and increased energy I felt were amazing.  Not to mention, the break from work each day was wonderful and made me even more productive in the afternoons.

These days, I try to focus on various forms of exercise so my body doesn’t get accustomed to anything.  A recent addition to my routine is cycling (competitive road biking), which after adjusting to traffic and clip-in pedals, I’m beginning to enjoy.  I also take a few classes at my gym, lift weights at least twice per week, use the elliptical on bad-weather days, and run whenever possible at various speeds.  On short days (under 4 miles), I’ll try and maintain a 9-minute-mile pace.  On longer days, I’ll average around a 10-minute-mile.  I guess you could call me more of a jogger than a runner, but I think everyone has to do what works best for them.  I also enjoy participating in local races to keep me motivated and always have a goal to work towards.
